Phytochemical screening and antimicrobial assessment of Abutilon mauritianum, Bacopa monnifera and Datura stramonium

Abstract: Three medicinal plants -Abutilon mauritianum, Bacopa monnifera and Datura stramonium were assessed for phytochemical components and antimicrobial activity. The results revealed that all the three plant extracts contained saponins, tannins and alkaloids. Only Datura stramonium contained glycosides. The plants exert varying inhibitory effects on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumonia and Escherichia coli. The minimum inhibitory concentration of the plant extracts ranged between 10% (w/v) (Bacopa monnifera)… Show more

“…Percentage yield of the extract = weight of extract (gm) / weight of Ocimum powder (gm) × 100 =13(gm) / 100(gm) × 100 = 13% (Banso and Adeyemo, 2006). This result is almost similar to the results of Tomar et al (2010) who found that the percentage recovery of ethanolic extract was 10.6% w/w from fine ocimum leaves powder which was extracted by using a soxhlet apparatus.…”

“…Saponins are special classes of glycosides which have been reported to possess soapy properties and active microbial agents (Banso and Adeyemo 2006) Tannins have also been reported to prevent the development of microorganisms by precipitating microbial protein and making nutritional proteins unavailable to the (Sodipo et al, 1991). Alkaloids are poisonous but they have been proved to be useful in correcting renal disorders.…”
