The current study was conducted to examine the possible advantages of Heydotis corymbosa (L.) Lam. extract nanogel as a perspective for enhanced permeation and extended skin deposition in psoriasis-like dermatitis. Optimised nanophytosomes (NPs) were embedded in a pluronic gel base to obtain nanogel and tested ex vivo (skin penetration and dermatokinetics) and in vivo. The optimised NPs had a spherical form and entrapment efficiency of 73.05 ± 1.45% with a nanosized and zeta potential of 86.11 nm and −10.40 mV, respectively. Structural evaluations confirmed encapsulation of the drug in the NPs. Topical administration of prepared nanogel to a rat model of psoriasis-like dermatitis revealed its specific in vivo anti-psoriatic efficacy in terms of drug activity compared to the control and other formulations. Nanogel had improved skin integrity and downregulation of inflammatory cytokines. These findings suggest that developed phytoconstituent-based nanogel has the potential to alleviate psoriasis-like dermatitis with better skin retention and effectiveness.

A psoríase é uma patologia crônica que afeta pele, unhas e articulações, causando ônus físico e emocional. Essa doença é comumente tratada com formulações tópicas, fototerapia, medicamentos sistêmicos ou terapias combinadas. Entretanto, alguns desses tratamentos podem causar efeitos colaterais e apresentam alto custo, sendo inacessíveis para uma parcela da população. Dessa maneira, surge a necessidade de se buscar novas alternativas terapêuticas para o controle da psoríase. Dentre essas, destaca-se o uso de extratos vegetais. O presente estudo é uma revisão da literatura que teve como objetivos analisar o potencial terapêutico de espécies de plantas ocorrentes no Brasil e de produtos de origem vegetal para o tratamento da psoríase, bem como apresentar um panorama geral das patentes na área e do desenvolvimento de fitoterápicos no país. Para tal, foram consultados trabalhos científicos publicados nos últimos 25 anos, obtidos a partir de buscas nas bases PubMed, Science Direct, Scielo, dentre outras, empregando os termos “psoríase”, “extrato vegetal” e “planta medicinal”. Além disso, foi realizada uma busca de patentes na base de dados do INPI, usando “psoríase”, “extrato”, “planta” e “formulações” como palavras-chave. Os estudos analisados demonstram a eficácia de plantas medicinais e seus metabólitos no controle da psoríase, e os dados compilados acerca das inovações na área mostram que o setor de produção de medicamentos à base de espécies vegetais ainda avança no Brasil. Tais achados contribuem, portanto, para a futura consolidação de tratamentos à base de plantas, mais acessíveis e eficazes para o controle da psoríase.

Psoriasis is a noncontagious, autoimmune chronic inflammatory disease with an unknown root cause. It is classified as a multifactorial and chronic skin disorder that also affects the immune system and is genetic. Environmental factors such as stress, infections, and injuries all play an important role in the disease's development. Although there is no cure for this disease, topical, oral, and systemic whole‐body treatments are available to relieve symptoms. Several plants and phytochemicals which have been found effective in the management of the psoriasis experimentally (preclinical and clinical). These plants/phytochemicals have applications in topical, oral, and systemic treatments. Traditionally, some of the plants have been utilized as the primary treatment, including their extracts and/or phytochemicals, for individuals with moderate to severe psoriasis (due to fewer side effects), while phototherapy is generally reserved for more advanced cases. This report describes various plants and phytochemicals that have been found to be effective against psoriasis in in vitro, preclinical, and clinical studies. This review summarizes the key findings from experimental studies on various pathological aspects of psoriasis and may be useful, effective, and informative for future research.
