Phytochemical Screening and Total Phenolic Compounds of Red Ginger (Zingiber officinale) and Secang Wood (Caesalpinia sappan) As Preliminary Test of Antiarthritis

Abstract: Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune disease that causes chronic inflammation occurs of the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis is characterized by the the overproduction of proinflammation cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-1. The phenolic compounds mainly anthocyanin and elagitanin have TNF-α inhibition activity that induces cyclooxygenase-2 expressions that cause inflammation. Phytochemical screening showed that ethanol extract of red ginger contains alkaloids, phenolics, flavonoids, tannins, terpenoid, and steroids… Show more

“…Additionally, the CSE contains a variety of phenolic compounds, such as chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, and gallic acid. In this study, the total phenolic content of the CSE from Thailand, measured in gallic acid equivalents per gram, aligns with the findings of previous research conducted in Indonesia, which reported a value of 27.65 mg GAE/g [25]. The antioxidant properties of CSE, as determined by FRAP, DPPH, and ABTS, have been demonstrated to be compared with previously published research (FRAP, 78.7 ± 2.4 mM Fe 2+ /mg; DPPH, 51.2 ± 3.2 µM and ABTS, 64.8 ± 4.2 µM/mg) [26][27][28].…”

“…Penelitian [47] menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak secang dan jahe merah juga mengandung senyawa fenolik yang memiliki kemampuan mengikat kation dan biomolekul lain, sehingga mengstabilkan protein akibat adanya perlakuan panas [48]. Menurut penelitian [49] menegaskan peningkatan stabilitas protein termal dipicu oleh interaksi antara senyawa fenolik dengan glisin pada protein BSA.…”

“…The phenolic compounds in ginger are mainly such as oleoresin, flavonoids, tannins, essential oils, and gingerols which function to help optimize organ function (Febriani et al, 2018;Mao et al, 2019). The total phenolic compounds of red ginger (Zingiber officinale) extract was 21.90 mgGAE/g extract using the Folin-Ciocalteau method (Amalia et al, 2021). The red ginger has antibacterial and antioxidant properties (Mao et al, 2019) whose activity stimulates the digestive system (Kuralkar et al, 2021).…”
