Phytocontact dermatitis due to Ranunculus arvensis: report of three cases

Abstract: Ranunculus arvensis ( R. arvensis ) is a member of the Ranunculaceae family and is often used by advanced age women living in rural areas for the topical treatment of arthralgia, myalgia, hemorrhoid, and warts. Protoanemonin is a substance found in the fresh leaves of the plants from the Ranunculaceae family and leads to contact dermatitis. In this report, we present three cases that developed phytocontact dermatitis caused by the topical use of R. arvensis … Show more

“…Ranunculus species have been commonly used in traditional medicines to treat rheumatism, intermittent fever, and rubefacient [32]. However, in some plants, like R. arvensis, R. bulbosus, R. ficaria, R. sardous, and R. sceleratus, caution must be required when using for medicinal and edible purposes, since crushing leaves produce protoanemonin, a toxic substance, which damages the skin and mucous membranes [33,34]. In this study, Rb-ME, which is a methanol extract of Ranunculus bulumei whose pharmacological activity has not been reported, did not show toxicity in macrophages, such as RAW264.7 cells and peritoneal macrophages and in mice (data not shown).…”

“…Moreover, R. arvensis extracts showed antioxidant and anticarcinogenic activities [49,62]. However, topical use of the plant may cause contact dermatitis, such as skin inflammation, skin burns, and injury of mucous membranes [80][81][82].…”
