“…Analysis was conducted on an HPLC system (600, Waters, Milford, MA, USA) equipped with a C8 column (Eclipse XDB, Agilent Technologies, Santa Clara, CA, USA; 150 × 4.6 mm, 3.5 μm) and a photodiode array detector (2998, Waters). Detailed information about the pigment analysis methods is provided in Zhuang et al (2014). Pigment standards were purchased from DHI (Hørsholm, Denmark).…”

“…Carotenoids were measured following the method of Van Heukelem and Thomas [] according to the procedure described in detail in Zhuang et al . []. The high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) (Waters 600) system was equipped with an Eclipse SDB C8 column (150 mm × 4.6 mm, 3.5 µm) and a photodiode array detector (Waters 2998).…”

“…Samples for carotenoid (fucoxanthin, peridinin, and 19'-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin) measurements were from 25 and 34 stations in spring and summer of 2011, respectively, and they were obtained on GF/F filters and stored at À80°C until analysis. Carotenoids were measured following the method of Van Heukelem and Thomas [2001] according to the procedure described in detail in Zhuang et al [2014]. The high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) (Waters 600) system was equipped with an Eclipse SDB C8 column (150 mm × 4.6 mm, 3.5 μm) and a photodiode array detector (Waters 2998).…”

“…Nutrient and organic matter inputs through the Yukon River may play an important role in biogeochemical cycles and may sustain primary productivity in the region off the Yukon River estuary. The phytoplankton community in the region of the Yukon River runoff was dominated by diatoms and chrysophytes at relative average contributions of 72% and 15%, respectively, whereas chlorophytes, dinoflagellates, and cryptophytes, on average, contributed 5%, 2%, and 2%, respectively, to the total Chl a (Zhuang et al, ). Diatoms overwhelmingly dominated the algal abundance in the whole seawater column of the Yukon‐River‐influenced region (72% in the surface layer, 91% in the depth of chlorophyll maximum, and 92% at the bottom).…”

“…Indeed, DMS production rates reached up to 18.5 n M /d, but DMS remained low in BSWC, varying from 0.05 to 0.95 n M , with an average of 0.45 n M . According to the study by Zhuang et al (), the distributions of chlorophyll derivatives indicate low zooplankton grazing rates when the cold pool emerges in the summer. Thus, low DMS levels in the cold water may primarily result from high rates of DMS consumption (13.2 n M /d) caused by the abundant bacteria.…”
