Phytosterols on growth performance, antioxidant enzymes and intestinal morphology in weaned piglets

Abstract: The results of the present study indicated that PS could decrease diarrhea rate, lower serum cholesterol, reduce lipid peroxidation and ameliorate intestinal morphology in weaned piglets. In addition, PS exerted better amelioration on intestinal morphology than polymyxin E in piglets. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.

“…These findings could, at least partially, explain the improved growth performance of broilers receiving β-sitosterol in the current study. However, controversial results on growth performance as an effect of phytosterols supplementation have also been observed in broilers [13], laying hens [15], and weaned piglets [11]. The discrepancies may be related with dosage and composition of phytosterols, but also species, environment, feeding management, etc.…”

“…Phytosterols are plant-derived natural steroid compounds, and mainly contain β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, campesterol, and brassicasterol. The effects of phytosterols’ application on livestock production have been recently investigated [11,12,13,14,15,16]. However, due to their mixed compositions, it is difficult to explain their mode of action and their physiological functions.…”

“…Moreover, a main component of PS (β-sitosterol) has been demonstrated to not only inhibit the production of tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin-1β, and interleukin-6 in RAW 264.7 mouse macrophages under immune stress but can also efficiently ameliorate the depletion of glutathione and reduce antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, in the colonic and hepatic tissues of rats induced by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine ( Baskar et al., 2012 ; Choi et al., 2012 ). In addition, the integrity of intestinal mucosa morphology is the basis of maintaining normal intestinal physiological activity in animals, improvement on gut morphology of weaned pigs fed PS has been shown by Hu et al. (2017) .…”

“…Plant extracts have been studied as alternative feed additives and were reported as good source of natural antioxidant to improve animal production and health status ( Hu et al., 2017 ). However, plant extract contains higher amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids that may lead to oxidative stress in chickens ( Gao et al., 2010 ).…”
