Piecewise-Linearized Cell Transmission Model and Parameter Calibration Methodology

Abstract: This paper concerns the development of macroscopic freeway traffic models and parameter calibration methodologies that are computationally efficient and suitable for use in real-time traffic monitoring and control applications. Toward the fulfillment of these objectives, a macroscopic traffic model, the Switching-Mode Model (SMM), is presented, which is a piecewise linearized version of Daganzo's Cell Transmission Model (CTM). The observability and controllability properties of the SMM modes are reviewed, sinc… Show more

“…The trapezoidal CTM has found various applications, e.g., in freeway ramp metering, signal optimization, and traffic state estimation (Friedrich and Almasri, 2006;Feldman and Maher, 2002;Sun et al, 2003;Tampere and Immers, 2007), and has been subject to thorough experimental validations (e.g., Brockfeld and Wagner, 2006;Munoz et al, 2006Munoz et al, , 2004. Early network implementations are NETCELL (Cayford et al, 1997), and the model of Lee (1996); Ziliaskopoulos and Lee (1997).…”

“…This extra requirement increases the problem complexity but removes the need for prior expert knowledge about congestion patterns. Bottleneck identification as used in [27,28] or choosing an arbitrary (based on educated opinion) point for a change in the FD parameter set [16] is not explicitly required. These are left to the optimisation algorithm to deal with, aiming at avoiding overparametrisation as well.…”
