PillCam colon capsule endoscopy (PCCE) in colonic diseases

Abstract: Diseases affecting the colon are common worldwide and can cause a major health problem. Colorectal cancer (CRC) as well as Inflammatory bowel diseases represent a major cause of morbidity and mortality in western countries. PillCam colon capsule endoscopy (PCCE) is a novel and promising technology that can be useful for the screening and monitoring of colonic diseases. In the recent years many articles examined the use of various versions of PCCE-the 1st and 2nd generation versus various other endoscopic or ra… Show more

“…Since the introduction of the CCE-2 with improved performance as described above, the accuracy of CCE for polyp detection has increased [10,13,25,26]. To date, five studies have been published on polyp detection by CCE-2 compared with conventional colonoscopy [27][28][29][30][31].…”

“…To increase the accuracy of CCE, secondgeneration CCE was developed and eventually introduced in 2009. This modality is a novel and promising technology that can be useful for screening and monitoring of colorectal diseases [10]. In this review article, we comprehensively analyze recent reports and discuss the potential roles and future perspectives of CCE.…”

“…2 Recently, WCE has becoming increasingly used in patients with cardiac devices such as pacemakers, internal cardiac defibrillators (ICD), and left-ventricular assist devices (LVAD). 3 However, manufacturers have proposed a theoretical electromagnetic interference between the capsule and the cardiac device itself. 4,5 The origins of this theory arose from observations in patients with implantable cardiac devices who underwent radiofrequency ablation and were noted to have device malfunction and failure during such an intervention.…”

“…It has proven invaluable for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) diagnosis and surveillance amongst other clinical applications. However, conventional colonoscopy (CC) remains an invasive, labourand resource-intensive procedure which is associated with certain risks and adverse events, including perforation, haemorrhage and the risks associated with sedation or even anaesthesia if required (1,2). Furthermore, it is an uncomfortable, undignified experience for many patients with several points of contention, from the procedure itself to the laxative bowel preparation required beforehand (1).…”
