Pilot scale testing of advanced oxidation processes for degradation of geosmin and MIB in recirculated aquaculture

Abstract: The presence of geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) in recirculated aquaculture systems has a significant negative impact on the fish production due to poor flavour quality of produced fish and increased risk of rejection by fish processers. Advanced Oxidation Processes has a high potential for removal of geosmin and MIB in water and in this study UV/H2O2 and UV/O3 has been tested in pilot scale in real aquaculture process water. First order degradations constants were between 0.6 (UV/O3) and 1.2 (UV/H2O2) h−… Show more

“…The differences observed in P PART levels between the Control group and the filtered treatments were caused by the presence of a microscreen in the 100, 60 and 20µm groups. Water color and optical density were improved by presence of microscreens, as previously observed by Klausen and Grønborg (2010), and Davidson et al (2011a).…”

“…After collection, samples were stored at 4ºC or frozen for subsequent analyzes according to standard protocols, as described in Suhr and Pedersen (2010) and in Dalsgaard and Pedersen (2011). UV transmission and absorbance was measured at 254nm in quartz glass cuvettes, and optical density was measured at 650nm (Klausen and Grønborg, 2010).…”

“…Application of O3 prior to biofiltration has been shown to be effective for the removal of geosmin, MIB, and DBP precursors (Klausen and Grønborg, 2010;Park et al, 2015;Sánchez-Polo et al, 2006;Yan et al, 2010). An investigation of O3-biofiltration treatment at full-scale by Nerenberg et al (2000) reported MIB removals of 36-54% by ozonation (1.3 mg/L O3) followed by 26-46% removal across biofiltration (17 min EBCT).…”

“…The very high level of bacteria removal using the H2O2/UV treatment has also been documented and demonstrated in other studies (Bhatti et al, 2011;Penru et al, 2012). This method has been shown to improve water quality via disinfection (Klausen & Grønborg, 2010). The use of a mixture of two or more oxidants produces a synergic oxidation effect, which enhances microbial destruction and improves the disinfection process (Sharrer & Summerfelt, 2007).…”
