Pilot study CCQM-P172 – spectroscopic methods for HNO3 value assignment

Abstract: Main text The CCQM-P172 comparison was designed to evaluate the level of compatibility of laboratories' spectroscopic methods for trace gas quantification using nitric acid (HNO3) as a model system. Because it is present in NO2 gas standards as an impurity, HNO3 was chosen as the analyte for study. As primary reference gas mixtures of HNO3/N2 are (generally) unavailable for calibration, traceability for spectroscopic measurements will rely on the use of referenced molecular parameters (such as t… Show more

“…A joint technical project was progressed with the NPL for development of future ongoing comparisons for NO 2 in nitrogen at 10 µmol mol −1 (BIPM-QM-K6). Stability studies on six NPL prepared standards in three different cylinder treatments were performed at the BIPM headquarters using the NO 2 dynamic magnetic suspension balance (MSB) facility which incorporated a correction factor for HNO 3 determined with the study CCQM-P172 [49]. The monthly measurements performed at the BIPM enabled decay profiles of NO 2 amount fractions to be determined in each cylinder.…”
