Pilot study on photodynamic therapy for acne using indocyanine green and diode laser

Abstract: To demonstrate the efficacy of photodynamic therapy using indocyanine green (ICG) dye with a diode laser for acne treatment of Asian subjects, an analysis was performed of 16 randomly chosen Korean patients with acne vulgaris treated by photodynamic therapy for a mean follow up of 2 months. Volunteers were divided into two groups, a single- and multiple-treatment group, in which photodynamic therapy was repeated three times with 1-week intervals. Photodynamic therapy using ICG dye with a diode laser was effect… Show more

“…Other topical photosensitizers, which have been studied less extensively, include indocyanine green (or methylene blue) and indole-3-acetic acid 32,33,108113. Indole-3-acetic acid in particular may have an important role in clinical practice, primarily because patients receiving indole-3-acetic acid for acne experience less pain.…”

“…21 The phototoxic effect of ICG-enhanced therapy has been studied in various fields. [22][23][24][25][26][27][28] However, the strong binding of plasma proteins with ICG and its subsequent rapid clearance by the liver 21 results in no tumor selectivity after systemic administration.…”

“…We did not allow the topical or systemic agent for acne during the treatment and follow-up period of ICG-PDT; however, all subjects showed improvement with only ICG-PDT. Therefore, repetitive treatment sessions of ICG-PDT can According to the previous study by Kim et al, 19 both treatment sites using the diode laser combined with ICG and diode laser alone presented an improvement in the acne. The diode laser itself might improve the acne lesions.…”
