Pineapple mealybug wilt-associated viruses 1, 2, and 3 are associated with mealybug wilt disease of pineapple in Peru

Abstract: Mealybug wilt of pineapple (MWP) is the most important disease of pineapple worldwide. During the months of September and November 2020, pineapple production fields of the cultivar Hawaiiana and hybrid MD-2 in Satipo and Chanchamayo provinces of Peru, showed typical symptoms of MWP. Based on symptoms, the disease incidence level ranged between 70 and 90%. Symptomatic and asymptomatic foliar samples were collected and tested by RT-PCR using primers specific for pineapple mealybug wilt virus (PMWaV) 1, 2, and 3.… Show more

“…Similarly, in Indonesia, a prevalence of PWMD of 15.6-21.6% was attributed to Dysmicoccus brevipes [19]. In Peru, incidence of 70%-90% was reported in hybrid MD-2 and cultivar Hawaiiana of pineapple [20].…”

“…Pineapple Mealybug Wilt Disease is associated with mealybug wilt-associated virus PMWaV-1,2, and 3 as important viral pathogens [12,19,[21][22][23][24]. Te infection by these viruses can be single or mixed [20,21,25], hence unleashing varying efects. According to [26], PMWaV-1 is correlated with growth reductions of plant crop and yield reductions in the ratoon crops, whereas PMWaV-2 infection and mealybugs feeding are necessary for the development of PMWD.…”

“…Ananas comosus, Ampelovirus, Closteroviridae Mealybug wilt of pineapple (MWP) disease could be a limiting factor for pineapple (Ananas comosus) production worldwide. Pineapple mealybug wilt-associated viruses (PMWaVs) have been established as the causative agent of MWP in Cuba and Peru (Hernández-Rodrıguez et al, 2019;Carrasco-Lozano et al, 2023), the viruses being vectored by mealybugs (Sether et al, 2005). The characteristic symptoms of MWP are chlorotic patches along the lamina with necrotic leaf tips (Carrasco-Lozano et al, 2023).…”
