In this review we first outline the basics of transport theory and its recent generalization to offshell transport. We then present in some detail the main ingredients of any transport method using in particular the Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) implementation of this theory as an example. We discuss the potentials used, the ground state initialization and the collision term, including the in-medium modifications of the latter. The central part of this review covers applications of GiBUU to a wide class of reactions, starting from pion-induced reactions over proton and antiproton reactions on nuclei to heavy-ion collisions (up to about 30 AGeV). A major part concerns also the description of photon-, electron-and neutrino-induced reactions (in the energy range from a few 100 MeV to a few 100 GeV). For this wide class of reactions GiBUU gives an excellent description with the same physics input and the same code being used. We argue that GiBUU is an indispensable tool for any investigation of nuclear reactions in which final-state interactions play a role. Studies of pion-nucleus interactions, nuclear fragmentation, heavy-ion reactions, hypernucleus formation, hadronization, color transparency, electronnucleus collisions and neutrino-nucleus interactions are all possible applications of GiBUU and are discussed in this article.

GENIE[1] is a new neutrino event generator for the experimental neutrino physics community. The goal of the project is to develop a 'canonical' neutrino interaction physics Monte Carlo whose validity extends to all nuclear targets and neutrino flavors from MeV to PeV energy scales. Currently, emphasis is on the few-GeV energy range, the challenging boundary between the non-perturbative and perturbative regimes, which is relevant for the current and near future long-baseline precision neutrino experiments using accelerator-made beams. The design of the package addresses many challenges unique to neutrino simulations and supports the full life-cycle of simulation and generator-related analysis tasks.GENIE is a large-scale software system, consisting of ∼120,000 lines of C++ code, featuring a modern object-oriented design and extensively validated physics content.

The NEUT intranuclear cascade model is described and fit to a large body of π ± -nucleus scattering data. Methods are developed to deal with deficiencies in the available historical data, and robust uncertainty estimates are produced. The results are compared to a variety of simulation packages, and the data itself. This work provides a method for tuning Final State Interaction models, which are of particular interest to neutrino experiments that operate in the few-GeV energy region, and provides results which can be used directly by the T2K and Super-Kamiokande collaborations, for whom NEUT is the primary simulation package.
