Pl 17 is a novel gene independent of known downy mildew resistance genes in the cultivated sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)

Abstract: Pl 17, a novel downy mildew resistance gene independent of known downy mildew resistance genes in sunflowers, was genetically mapped to linkage group 4 of the sunflower genome. Downy mildew (DM), caused by Plasmopara halstedii (Farl.). Berl. et de Toni, is one of the serious sunflower diseases in the world due to its high virulence and the variability of the pathogen. DM resistance in the USDA inbred line, HA 458, has been shown to be effective against all virulent races of P. halstedii currently identified in… Show more

“…Until a satisfactory method, in laboratory or field, is developed, major genes will continue to be the basis in breeding for downy mildew resistance. Wild Helianthus annuus appears to be a good source of genes, several new ones have been identified recently (Qi et al, 2015(Qi et al, , 2016Vear et al, 2008). In the last publication, the authors made the interesting remark that many ecotypes with downy mildew resistance come from dry or desert areas (Texas) where no downy mildew is observed.…”

“…More than 20 Pl loci ( Pl1 to Pl21, Pl Arg , Pl PMI3 ), conferring resistance to at least one pathotype of P. halstedii , have been described and 13 of them mapped in sunflower in six main clusters localized on five different linkage groups (LG) (LG 1, 2, 4, 8, and 13), but none has been cloned so far (see for review, Gascuel et al, 2015; Qi et al, 2015, 2016). Resistance to pathotype 710 of P. halstedii , a widely spread pathotype in France, is observed with different Pl loci (Gascuel et al, 2015).…”

“…The NMS HA 89 was induced by streptomycin treatment of HA 89 that possessed a single recessive nuclear male sterility gene ms9 , released by the USDA-ARS and the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station, Fargo, ND in 1990 (Jan and Rutger, 1988; Chen et al, 2006). HA 458 is a high oleic and downy mildew resistant germplasm carrying the Pl 17 gene released by USDA-ARS and the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station, Fargo, ND in 2010 (Hulke et al, 2010; Qi et al, 2015). Both HA 89 and HA 458 are susceptible to BSR disease.…”
