Informal settlements are a common phenomenon in Indian cities, where the urban poor carve out their own spaces outside the formal planning system. Maqboolpura is one of the oldest informal settlements in Amritsar, which grapples with various urban design issues such as a poor built environment, inadequate open spaces, and ignorant public places. These issues affect the livability of the people of informal settlements. Non-places, characterized by a lack of identity and social relations, are prevalent in Maqboolpura due to their marginalization. This paper aims to explore the visual impressions of public spaces and the potential of redesigning the non-places in Maqboolpura to improve livability. This paper analyzes the visual impressions through the spatial structure of streets and the patterns of use by the dwellers in Maqboolpura. It proposes the design interventions to improve the non-places, such as creating multifunctional and flexible community spaces with the help of art and landscape in the process. The paper argues that improving the visual appeal of public spaces and reimagining the non-places can contribute to the adaptive livability of Maqboolpura. It covers the core aspects of public spaces inside the informal settlements to improve the quality of spaces for the urban poor.

Kelurahan Petamburan merupakan permukiman kota tak terencana, yang sejak awal pertumbuhannya sebagai kampung tradisional Betawi pedalaman, telah mengalami perubahan dan proses pemadatan yang terus menerus akibat perkembangan sektor komersil. Pemadatan tersebut menyebabkan keterbatasan ruang terbuka yang menimbulkan permasalahan spasial permukiman dan interaksi sosial masyarakat. Ruang terbuka publik di perkampungan memiliki fungsi dalam dimensi perilaku, ekonomi, dan budaya yang sangat penting bagi keberlanjutan komunitas dan permukiman berbasis sistem swadaya. Program Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini difokuskan pada satuan unit socio-spatial-control Rukun Warga 03, sebagai kawasan terpadat di Kelurahan Petamburan. Kepadatan permukiman yang tinggi berkorelasi dengan permasalahan pemanfaatan ruang yang belum optimal, kenyamanan ruang, estetika ruang, dan jati diri ruang, untuk mendukung kehidupan sosial, budaya, dan ekonomi warga setempat secara maksimal. Oleh karenanya program ini bertujuan untuk memberdayakan warga setempat agar dapat berpartisipasi aktif atau berperan aktif dalam kegiatan program “placemaking”, untuk memberikan persepsi positif tentang identitas dan kebanggaan lokal, pemberdayaan lokal, place attachment, hubungan sosial dan kualitas hidup. Program Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini dilakukan dengan metoda Standard Placemaking dan Community Action Plan yang meliputi tahapan perencanaan untuk proyek percontohan secara partisipatif. Pada tahap perencanaan ini dilakukan pendampingan dalam bentuk Focus Group Discussion bersama masyarakat dan tokoh masyarakat setempat, untuk mengidentifikasi permasalahan, merumuskan prioritas program penataan ruang publik, mengembangkan alternatif rancangan, dan merencanakan realisasi proyek percontohan. Tahap realisasi proyek percontohan akan diselenggarakan pada program tahap selanjutnya. Pelaksanaan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini telah berhasil memberdayakan masyarakat setempat untuk berperan aktif dalam proses penataan ruang terbuka publik permukimannya. Petamburan Village is an unplanned urban settlement, which since its development as an inland traditional Betawi village, has experienced changes and a continuous process of densification due to developments in the commercial sector. This densification causes limited open space which creates spatial problems of settlements and social interaction of the community. Public open spaces have a very important function for the sustainability of communities and settlements based on self-help systems. This Community Service Program was focused on the socio-spatial-control unit Rukun Warga 03, as the most densely populated area in Petamburan Village. High residential density correlates with problems of spatial use, comfort, aesthetics, and identity, to optimally support the social, cultural, and economic life of local residents. This program aimed to empower local residents to actively participate in the "placemaking" program, to provide a positive perception of local identity and pride, local empowerment, place attachment, social relations and quality of life. This Community Service Program has been carried out using the Standard Placemaking and Community Action Plan method which included participatory planning stages for a pilot project. At this planning stage, counseling, mentoring, and Focus Group Discussions have been carried out together with the local community, to identify problems, formulate priorities for public spatial planning programs, develop design alternatives, and plan the realization of pilot projects. This Community Service Program has succeeded in empowering local communities to play an active role in the process of planning and designing their settlement public spaces.

The paper investigates the sustainability potential of the intangible cultural heritage preserved in informal settlements seen as an extension of rurality in urban settings. It delves into this underexplored dimension of sustainability in the context of the Global South by analysing two informal settlements in Islamabad, Pakistan, namely, France Colony and Mehr Abadi. The grounded theory is adapted by using semistructured interviews during transect walks through the informal settlements followed by a thematic analysis conducted of the experiences, memories, values, religious beliefs, and norms of the dwellers in the two case studies. Four themes are deduced that identify sustainability heritage: (a) values and social practices; (b) communal networks and relationships; (c) built environment and ecology; and (d) remnants of rurality. The study contends that informal settlements are reservoirs of vernacular sustainability elements, and their cultural heritage should be supported instead of imposing planning policies influenced by the North. Culturally specific solutions acceptable to the informal communities are needed to improve the liveability within the city and inform the policy-making process. This requires finding a mechanism for preserving the indigenous regional culture in the informal settlements, their rich heritage, and sustainability-oriented knowledge and practices.
