Plain Radiography Still Is Required in the Planning of Treatment for Urolithiasis

Abstract: Additional plain radiography confers a significant advantage in the planning of treatment for urolithiasis once the diagnosis has been established by NCT because of information it provides regarding radio-opacity as well as stone size and visibility. This information cannot be delivered by NCT alone. We therefore recommend that KUB imaging is performed on all new stone patients referred for treatment.

“…1,12 However, our previous and present studies suggested that stone sizes detected by US with experienced sonographers did not show a tendency to be larger than those on CT. In contrast, it has been reported that KUB provides size measurement for most stones that are comparable with CT. 13 Although present data supported the accuracy of KUB for stone size measurement, our present results also suggest that KUB is not superior to US for stone size measurement, and it will not be reasonable to add KUB to US for accurate stone size measurement.…”

“…KUB can also be useful preoperatively to determine stone density, radio-opaqueness, and the ability to visualize the stone with fluoroscopy during SWL. In a study conducted at a national lithotripsy center, investigators obtained a KUB after a renal stone was diagnosed on CT. KUB findings significantly changed the surgical management in 17% of these cases [52].…”

“…Lamb et al [47] determined the proportion of stone patients in which management is altered by the interpretation of plain abdominal radiographs (KUB). They observed that on the basis of KUB findings a significant change in patient management occurred.…”
