Planar glass waveguide ring resonators with gain

Abstract: The frequency resolution of an active waveguide ring resonator spectrometer is fundamentally limited by spontaneous emission noise produced by the gain medium. A closed-form expression for this resolution is derived, and the result is used to determine the minimum, rms, angular rotation rate, random walk error achievable by an active ring resonator gyroscope. An active waveguide ring resonator is demonstrated in a neodymium-doped glass, and a finesse of 250 at a signal wavelength of 1060 nm is achieved for the… Show more

“…Silica-on-silicon and silicon nitride technologies allow the fabrication of resonators with very low loss [41]- [43], but LiNbO 3 [44], glass [45,46], silicon [47], polymers [48], and InP [49,50] are also used. Along with these fully passive ring resonators, some configurations, including an optical amplifier to compensate losses, have been also proposed and experimented [51,52].…”

“…1b). On the basis of such structures various elements of waveguide planar optics may be designed, such as splitters of Y type [36], 1xN splitters [37], multiplexers [38][39][40][41][42], directional couplers [43], ring resonators [44,45], planar polarizers [46], planar interferometers [47,48], gradient structures of multimode interference couplers MMI [49][50][51]. These elements cooperate with fiber waveguides.…”

“…Another example of integrating amplification into device functionality is ring resonator with gain, fabricated into Nd-doped glass by silver ion exchange, which can be used as an optical gyroscope rotation rate sensor. 182 The finesse of a 16 mm diameter resonator increased from 11 to 250, with pumping of the gain medium.…”
