Planctomyces maris sp. nov.: a Marine Isolate of the Planctomyces-Blastocaulis Group of Budding Bacteria

Abstract: A new marine strain of the Planctomyces-Blastocaulis group of stalked, budding bacteria was isolated : the name Planctomyces maris is proposed. Cells were spherical to ovoid, exhibited longitudinal symmetry and had a single fibrillar appendage located at one pole of mature cells. Reproduction occurred by budding at the opposite pole of the cell. The resulting daughter cell was motile by a single subpolar flagellum. The organism was an obligately aerobic, mesophilic heterotroph which utilized 15 of 81 carbon so… Show more

“…The anammox planctomycete 'Candidatus Kuenenia stuttgartiensis' was investigated by a metagenomic approach from a wastewater treatment plant enrichment culture (Strous et al, 2006). In addition, in collaboration with us, the Gordon and Betty Moore foundation has funded draft sequencing of the two marine planctomycetes Blastopirellula marina DSM 3645 T and Planctomyces maris DSM 8797 T (Bauld and Staley, 1976) and Ward and co-workers at The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR) have generated an early draft of the genome of the freshwater isolate of Gemmata obscuriglobus UQM 2246…”

“…Most of the strains so far isolated in pure culture have been from aquatic and aerobic habitats (Bauld and Staley, 1976;Franzmann and Skerman, 1984;Giovannoni et al, 1987b;Schlesner, 1994) and they are all obligate or facultative aerobic chemoheterotrophs that use carbohydrates as their major source of carbon. However, molecular methods like fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequencing as well as targeted cultivation efforts have revealed a much broader distribution of the Planctomycetes in the environment.…”

“…Planctomycetes were all originally isolated from aquatic habitats as diverse as acid bogs and sewage treatment plants, and direct molecular cloning and probe studies have extended this diversity (1,5,9,12,17,27,28,29,30,33,43,44). Many of the original isolates have been confirmed as planctomycetes by phylogenetic analysis of rRNA sequences (11,42).…”
