Plankton distribution associated with frontal zones in the vicinity of the Pribilof Islands

Abstract: We studied the effect of four types of fronts, the coastal front, the middle front, the shelf partition front and the shelf break front on the quantitative distribution and the composition of plankton communities in the Pribilof area of the eastern Bering Sea shelf in late spring and summer of 1993 and 1994. The coastal fronts near St. Paul and St. George Islands and the coastal domains encircled by the fronts featured specific taxonomic composition of planktonic algae, high abundance and production of phytopl… Show more

“…Frontal structures have been shown to influence the overall abundance (Munk et al, 1995(Munk et al, , 1999Lochmann et al, 1997;Hays et al, 2001;Lough and Manning, 2001) and species composition (Valdéz and Moral, 1998;Flint et al, 2002;Munk et al, 2002) of ichthyoplankton and zooplankton assemblages. The variability in plankton distribution observed at frontal structures reflects interactions between hydrodynamic processes, spawning patterns, behavioural adaptations, and differential survival (Sánchez-Velasco and Shirasago, 1999;Gray and Miskiewicz, 2000;Carleton et al, 2001;Somarakis et al, 2002;Espinosa-Fuentes and Flores-Coto, 2004).…”

“…Pseudo-nitzschia subcurvata is abundant in the Antarctic (Hasle, 1964;Hasle & Syvertsen, 1996;Scott & Thomas, 2005;Almandoz et al, 2008). The species has been also encountered in the Arctic, Subarctic Pacific and near the eastern Australia (Taylor & Waters, 1982;Crosbie & Furnas, 2001;Flint et al, 2001;Ikävalko, 2003). The species was first reported for the Gulf of Mexico by Aké-Castillo & Okolodkov (2009).…”
