This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the emerging coherent passive optical network (CPON) technology and its role in the evolution of next-generation PON architectures. After reviewing the fundamental principles of traditional time-division multiplexed PON and tracking its development across successive standards, the unique benefits of applying coherent detection to PONs are examined.
