Plant Cell Cultures as a Tool to Study Programmed Cell Death

Abstract: Programmed cell death (PCD) is a genetically controlled suicide process present in all living beings with the scope of eliminating cells unnecessary or detrimental for the proper development of the organism. In plants, PCD plays a pivotal role in many developmental processes such as sex determination, senescence, and aerenchyma formation and is involved in the defense responses against abiotic and biotic stresses. Thus, its study is a main goal for plant scientists. However, since PCD often occurs in a small g… Show more

“…In order to assess the dependence of cAMP on the phosphoproteome, we compared WT and cAS TBY cell lines grown for 3 days at 27 • C. Plant cell suspensions were chosen since they are a cytologically uniform and reproducible system that is suitable for an efficient induction of changes in the physical environment [49]. In the mutant line, the cAMP content was reduced by approximately 50% due to the sequestration by the sponge which is based on the a PKA I regulatory subunit that specifically binds free cAMP [6].…”

“…Cell cultures are maintained under aseptic controlled conditions [ 19 ]. This allows a high reproducibility of results to be achieved and the use cell cultures as model systems for studying many processes, like cell specialization [ 20 ], organogenesis [ 21 ], embryogenesis [ 22 ], reproductive processes, cellular responses to endogenous [ 20 , 23 , 24 ] and exogenous factors [ 25 , 26 , 27 ], programmed cell death [ 28 ], the metabolome [ 29 ], etc. In addition, due to their advantages, cell cultures have found wide application in biotechnology [ 17 , 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 ].…”

“…We accomplished that in this study by using Arabidopsis thaliana cell suspension culture (ACSC), a widely used model for studying plant PCD (Malerba and Cerana, 2021). The ACSC consists of a homogenous cell population in which cell death can easily be induced by a variety of chemical or physical stimuli (McCabe and Leaver, 2000; Lanubile et al, 2022).…”
