Abstract:Top‐down and bottom‐up forces in tropical savannas have shaped the evolution of traits that enable plants to thrive in environments where soils are poor, dry seasons are long, fire is frequent, woody plants and grasses compete and herbivores range from cryptic caterpillars to elephants that topple entire trees.
