Plant distribution data for the Czech Republic integrated in the Pladias database

Abstract: Research on the Czech flora has a long tradition and yielded a large number of records on the occurrence of plants. Several independent electronic databases were established during the last three decades in order to collect and manage these records. However, this fragmentation and the different characteristics of each database strongly limit the utilization and analyses of plant distribution data. Solving these problems was one of the aims of the Centre of Excellence PLADIAS (Plant Diversity Analysis and Synth… Show more

“…The present dataset provides the most comprehensive information on genomic parameters ever provided for a flora of a particular country. These data are now incorporated into the Database of the Czech Flora and Vegetation (Pladias; www.pladias.cz, Wild et al 2019) and will be updated when new measurements become available. This dataset will enable robust tests of the effect of individual genomic parameters on species anatomy, physiology, morphology and ecology (e.g.…”

“…Because of its important ecological consequences, information about genome size and/or ploidy level is included in modern biological floras and trait databases such as the Ecological Flora of the British Isles (Fitter & Peat 1994; http://www.ecoflora.co.uk), the Database on Biological and Ecological Traits of the Flora of Germany (BiolFlor; Klotz et al 2002, www.biolflor.de) and the Global Plant Trait Database (TRY; Kattge et al 2011, http://www.try-db.org). Information about genome size will also be included in the Database of the Czech Flora and Vegetation (Pladias; www.pladias.cz, Wild et al 2019). However, there is no genome size data for many widespread species, and the data reported in the literature are sometimes difficult to use for a variety of reasons (see below).…”

“…BRNL, BRNM, BRNU, CB, CBFS, CESK, CHEB, CHOM, FMM, GLM, GM, HOMP, HR, KHMS, LIM, LIT, MJ, MMI, MP, MZ, NJM, OH, OL, OLM, OMJ, OMP, OP, OSM, OVMB, PL, PR, PRA, PRC, ROZ, SOB, SOKO, SUM, VM, VYM, W and ZMT (acronyms follow Thiers 2019), were consulted as the main sources of taxonomically examined records. Most records for maps of common and easyto-identify taxa came from the Pladias database (Wild et al 2019), which has integrated data from five large national databases, several regional projects and unpublished field records from the maps' authors and regional contributors.…”

“…Integration of all available records on the distribution of vascular plants in the Czech Republic into a single central database and initiation of mapping their distributions were two of the aims of the PLADIAS project funded by the Czech Science Foundation in 2014-2018. The plant occurrence module within a new Pladias database (www.pladias.cz) was launched in 2014 and now contains more than 13 million records of almost 5 thousand taxa of various ranks (Wild et al 2019). This database and an associated web-based mapping interface serve as a basic platform for mapping plant distributions within this country.…”
