Plant diversity across five vegetation belts in the Pyrenees (Catalonia, Spain)

Abstract: In this paper we analyze the size and habitat partitioning of the vascular floras of five areas of the NE Iberian Peninsula, representing five distinct vegetation belts and three floristic regions: Mediterranean (basal belt), medio-European (submontane and montane belts) and Boreo-Alpine (subalpine and alpine belts). Each area covered over 1000 ha, and was fairly uniform in terms of potential vegetation, bedrock and bioclimate. They excluded large villages and field areas, the landscape being mainly natural or… Show more

“…Considering the significant correlations between the montane pollen ratio and TRWi chronologies, a higher correlation of montane ratio with the GER and AMI chronologies suggests that these localities share similar environmental conditions with BSN that might influence the vegetation communities. This might be at least partially related to the climate influence at local scale, which is conditioned by altitude and shows notable contrasts according to elevation and slope orientation (Ninot and Ferré, 2008). In general, our results indicate that the BSN montane pollen ratio better correlates with tree growth from sites located at the upper-subalpine stage (>2000 m a.s.l.)…”

La composición del paisaje y de los diversos taxones vegetales dominantes está en función de la formación de los suelos, la humedad y la orientación de las vertientes (Ninot y Ferré 2008).…”

“…In recent years, there has been a rapidly raising wave of interest in researching about the floral diversity to ecologists and biogeographers (Brown & Lomolino, 1998;Colwell & Lees, 2000;Rosenzweig, 1995). Vegetation communities are identified by topography such as mountainous slopes, exposures, slopes and peaks (Austrheim, 2002;Gottfried, Pauli, Reiter, & Grabherr, 1999;Grytnes & Beaman, 2006;Grytnes & Vetaas, 2002;Ninot & Ferré, 2008).…”
