Archaeobotanical analysis of moat sediments from the Neolithic site of Chengtoushan, Hunan, China, provides evidence of the land-use change for rice and foxtail millet cultivation around the site. Rice constantly appeared through the three phases of Daxi culture with high percentages, while accompanying wetland species of paddy field weeds gradually decreased. In contrast, foxtail millet increased together with upland field and ruderal weeds through the time. These changes suggest that foxtail millet cultivation was established with the expansion of dry farming in region of the site, while rice cultivation was continuously practiced on the alluvial plain surrounding the site. This diversification of land-use through the addition of foxtail millet cultivation may be attributed to population increase or as a buffer to natural disasters such as flooding. In addition, gathering of wild nuts and fruits continued alongside cultivation. These multiple strategies for food procurement provided sustainable food supply for the population of Chengtoushan for 1,800 years.

Archaeological excavations on the 'Kiechlberg' near Thaur (Tyrol, Austria) excavated a dwelling site with an experimental phase of copper metallurgy from the Late Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age. Findings of copper ore, slag, unwrought copper and ingots document the processing sequence from ore to raw copper. Archaeobotanical studies on soil samples from these cultural layers reveal that the early dwellers were embedded in an agricultural society with cultivation of Hordeum vulgare (barley), Triticum dicoccon (emmer) and Pisum sativum (pea). Small domestic animals like Ovis/Capra (sheep/ goats) dominate during the Late/Final Neolithic whereas Bos sp. (cattle) prevail during the Early Bronze Age. Nutrition was supplemented by gathering wild plants, e.g. Corylus avellana (hazelnuts) and Quercus sp. (acorns). Anthracological analyses provide information about the use of wood which was primarily taken from a mixed conifer forest composed of Picea abies (spruce), Abies alba (fir) and some Fagus sylvatica (beech). The surrounding woodland was only moderately affected by exploitation for construction and energy purposes even in epochs when smelting activities took place.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, iktisat tarihinin gelişimine katkı sağlayacak arkeoloji temelli, kazı süresince ortak çalışma alanı kurulabilecek bir yöntemin başlangıcının gerekliliğini vurgulamaktır. Öncelikle önemli olan yeni bir yöntem kurmak değil, arkeolojik yöntemlerle, iktisadi metotların birlikte kullanılabileceği bir alt disiplinin gerekliliğini vurgulamak, bir düşünce gelişimini belirleyerek iktisat tarihi ve hızla gelişen arkeoloji bilimi ile ortak payda sağlamaktır. Çalışmada, günümüz iktisadi meselelerin başlangıcını hazırlayan tarih öncesi yaşamın tüketim, üretim, işbölümü, mülkiyet, sanat ve din temelli davranış ve alışkanlıkları incelenmiş, arkeoloji ile iktisat tarihi arasında kurulacak disiplinlerarası birliktelikte Anadolu'nun zengin veriler sunduğu Çatalhöyük ile örneklendirilmiştir.
