Plasma and Tissue Bioavailability and Blood Pressure Lowering Effects of Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids from Commonly Eaten, Naturally Enriched, Foods

Abstract: AbstractGreater consumption of oily fish, and elevated plasma levels of the long-chain marine-derived omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), have been strongly and consistently associated with a reduced incidence of heart attacks, strokes, cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease and cancers. Despite international guidelines recommending eating oily fish at least once per week (> 250mg/day DHA and EPA), many peo… Show more

“…The omega 3 index is a way of expressing whether people are in a high risk category (low circulating levels of EPA and DHA) or in a low risk category (high circulating levels of EPA and DHA). The number of people in the high risk category halved after just six months of eating omega 3‐enriched chicken and eggs [8] . Scaled up to the global level, the effects of moving swathes of people from high risk to low risk represents a potentially huge economic saving.…”
