Plasma atrial natriuretic peptide concentrations in horses with heart disease: A pilot study

Abstract: Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is a cardiovascular biomarker that might be useful in assessing the severity of cardiac disease in horses. Plasma ANP concentrations (Cp(ANP)) were compared between horses with heart disease but normal chamber size and function (Group A; n=6), horses with heart disease associated with left atrial (LA) enlargement, LA dysfunction, and/or left ventricular (LV) enlargement (Group B; n=5), and horses with no clinically apparent cardiovascular disease (Group C; n=13). The median (mi… Show more

“…However, some of the approaches are not very practical for daily clinical use. Therefore, we chose an allometric scaling approach that corrects echocardiographic variables to a standard body weight of 500 kg and allows intuitive interpretation of weight‐corrected variables . The results of this study show that allometric scaling of echocardiographic measurements of LA size in Warmblood horses is effective and eliminates the significant relationship of LA dimensions to body weight.…”

“…Debido a que la secuencia de aminoácidos del anp está altamente conservada entre especies, se pueden usar los ensayos desarrollados para humanos en la medición de estas sustancias en perros [38], al igual que se están validando para otras especies como los equinos [39].…”

“…Concentrations of C‐ANP have been shown to be increased in cows and horses with cardiac stresses from various causes . Concentrations of ANP decreased significantly after fluid resuscitation in hypovolemic adult horses, which was thought to be due to secondary catecholamine induced ANP production …”
