Plasma cell granuloma of the lung, response to radiation therapy, report of a single case

Abstract: A benign, inflammatory lung mass was discovered in a healthy 15-year-old boy who had no chest symptoms. A biopsy was performed, but total removal was not attempted. The histologic diagnosis was plasma cell granuloma of the lung. Because of progressive enlargement of the lung mass, radiation therapy was given and the mass has slowly regressed. Although surgery of these lung lesions is the preferred treatment, radiation therapy should be considered if there is no regression or if the mass continues to enlarge.

“…Plasmacytoma is a neoplastic proliferation of cytologically monotonous immature plasma cells without the mixed inflammatory appearance; it is more commonly seen in the bone marrow than extraosseous sites and tends to be multicentric. 7,9 Nonneoplastic intramedullary spinal cord lesions are rare, and plasma cell granuloma belongs to this category. 14 antecedently distinguish plasma cell granuloma from the other nonneoplastic intramedullary lesions without performing histological examination.…”

“…9,14 Both meningioma and plasma cell granuloma are localized around the spinal cord, but in the present case the tumor existed in the intramedullary region and no connection to the meninges was detected both radiologically and intraoperatively. Lymphoplasmacyte-rich meningioma has histological features similar to plasma cell granuloma.…”

“…32 Radiotherapy has been demonstrated to have some benefit, mainly in pulmonary IMT. [36][37][38] There is currently no evidence that chemotherapy or radiotherapy have a role for patients following complete resection. Despite the frequently reported use of adjuvant therapy for IMT in the literature, there is no definitive data establishing that it is efficacious and there are no standardized treatment protocols.…”

“…Chemotherapy has been reserved for patients in whom resection is prohibitively morbid or in patients who have incomplete resections. Radiotherapy has been shown to be of some benefit in pulmonary IPT [36,37]. As with chemotherapy, there is currently no evidence to support routine use of radiotherapy in patients with renal IPT who have complete resection.…”
