Plasma decontamination during preliminary ergodic divertor experiments in TORE SUPRA

Abstract: Preliminary experiments in the TORE SUPRA tokamak using the ergodic divertor configuration have shown a strong effect on plasma impurities. The result is a decontamination of the central plasma which is due to a decreased carbon content. This is the consequence of a screening effect of the peripheral ergodic layer which is due to an important increase of the recycling impurity flux, as well as of a modification of the impurity source terms.

“…There have been many observations of impurity screening or core decontamination in tokamaks with MP application [22,23,111,[123][124][125][126] and in helical devices with a stochastic layer [127][128][129][130][131][132][133][134] or with the island divertor configurations [75,135]. Evidence of decontamination or screening effects is found for several impurity species, e.g.…”

“…There have been many observations of impurity screening or core decontamination in tokamaks with RMP application [76,77,78], and in helical devices with a stochastic layer [79,80] or with the island divertor configurations [81,82]. It is not clear yet at all whether these phenomena are caused by the edge impurity screening or attributed to core transport or some other effects such as a change of source characteristic, etc.…”

“…On the other hand, extensive studies on the impurity behavior due to ergodization of the edge magnetic fields have been carried out on Tore Supra. In Tore Supra the activation of the ED led to a significant reduction in the concentration of intrinsic impurities and to an appreciable enhancement of the radiation from the plasma edge 8 . The ED worked differently on each ionization state of highly charged impurity ions 9 .…”
