Plasma Endocan Levels in Patients With Isolated Coronary Artery Ectasia

Abstract: Endocan is a soluble proteoglycan, secreted by human vascular endothelial cells. Endocan is a marker for vascular pathologies and an important mediator of angiogenesis, strongly associated with inflammation, vascular endothelial dysfunction, and atherosclerosis. The relationship between coronary artery ectasia (CAE) and endocan has not been evaluated. We aimed to investigate this association. Fifty-four patients with isolated CAE without coronary stenosis and 30 controls with normal coronary angiogram were inc… Show more

“…Other biomarker levels were within the normal range as in the control group of our study. Endothelial dysfunction, indicated by molecules such as endocan and nitric oxide, has been linked to isolated CAE in previous studies (10,11). In our study, low levels of adropin and high levels of MPV were found to be independent risk factors for isolated CAE.…”

“…Histopathological results are similar in patients with atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries and those with isolated CAE (21). In a study by Malviya et al (18), Type 4 ectasia was the most common type, while Turan et al (10) determined that Type 2 was most common. We also observed that Type 2 was the most common type in our study.…”

“…On the other hand, two recent studies found significantly lower mortality rates in CAE patients. In the first study, the cardiovascular mortality rate was 2% after a mean follow-up of 49 ± 21 months in 258 patients with CAE [14]. The second study, which included 540 patients with CAE, reported 2.22% mortality after 36 months of follow-up [15].…”

“…Our study 2 was designed as a pilot study, with some inevitable confounding factors. Therefore, further larger studies are needed to detect a causal relation between endocan and isolated CAE.…”
