Plasma-Etching and Modification of Polyethylene for Improved Surface Structure, Wettability and Optical Behavior

Abstract: In the present paper, the surface modification of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) polymer is done by plasma-etching to tune its surface structure, wettability and optical behavior to make it useful for technical applications. For this purpose, two gasses (N[Formula: see text] and (O[Formula: see text] are used as the discharge precursors in a home-built plasma reactor. The plasma-treated LDPE surface etch-rate (control other surface properties) is high at the beginning and slows down as the treatment time incr… Show more

“…Water diffuses more widely across the surface in this case, suggesting a higher level of hydrophilic properties. 33 The surface free energy is calculated by. Whereas the interfacial tensions between liquid and vapour are γ l , the interfacial tensions between solid and liquid are γ sl , and the interfacial tension between solid and vapour is γ s .…”

“…7, 8 respectively. For comparison, the change in the work of adhesion for low-density polyethylene (LDPE) polymer irradiated by N 2 and O 2 RF plasma gasses as function of plasma irradiation time are studied by Hassan et al 28 They found the work of adhesion increases from 60 mJ m −2 for pristine LDPE to 131 mJ m −2 for N 2 gas and increases to 142 mJ m −2 for O 2 gas by increasing the irradiation time to 3 min. The increasing in the work of adhesion is may be attributed to the polymer surface cleaning after plasma irradiation compared to unirradiated surface.…”
