Plasma exosomal caveolin-1 predicts Poor Prognosis in Ovarian Cancer

Abstract: Objective: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the levels of plasma exosomal caveolin-1(CAV1) and determine its prognostic value in ovarian cancer patients. Patients and Methods: Exosome-rich fractions were isolated from the plasma of 155 patients with ovarian cancer. TEM, NTA and western blot analysis were used to confirm the exosome integrity and purification. Results: Compared with healthy controls, plasma exosomal CAV1 levels in ovarian cancer patient were significantly down-regulated (P < 0.001). The low … Show more

“…This investigation has revealed a noteworthy association between pre-and postsurgical exosome levels and a statistically significant risk of disease recurrence, as previously reported [62][63][64][65]. Interestingly, a study comparing disease-free intervals in ovarian cancer patients reported a negative correlation with cav-1 exosomes, revealing a paradoxical relationship between exosome expression and cancer prognosis [66]. Jiang et al have recently confirmed these phenomena in liver tumors [67].…”

“…Cav1 is present in different cell types, tumor stages and locations, and its biological effects may vary. Cav1 may be closely related to the progression of some malignant tumors, such as bladder cancer [ 52 , 53 ], ovarian cancer [ 54 , 55 ], lung cancer [ 56 , 57 ], among which its role in PCa [ 58 , 59 ] being the most extensively explored. Cav1 expression is different in different types and stages of PCa, which affects the progression of PCa.…”

“…More than 150 unique exosomal miRNAs are identified in cancer patients, and hsa-miR-320d, hsa-miR-320c, and hsa-miR-320b may be potential biomarkers to predict treatment efficacy of PD-1/PD-L1 immunotherapy in lung cancers [ 108 ]. The levels of plasma exosomal caveolin-1 are found to be downregulated in ovarian cancer, and they are positively associated with prognosis and overall survival as a biomarker [ 109 ]. Similarly, plasma-derived exosomal miR-4732-5p is also highly expressed in epithelial ovarian cancer patients and could be used to monitor cancer progression [ 110 ].…”
