Plasma generated ozone and reactive oxygen species for point of use PPE decontamination system

Abstract: This paper reports a plasma reactive oxygen species (ROS) method for decontamination of PPE (N95 respirators and gowns) using a surface DBD source to meet the increased need of PPE due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A system is presented consisting of a mobile trailer (35 m3) along with several Dielectric barrier discharge sources installed for generating a plasma ROS level to achieve viral decontamination. The plasma ROS treated respirators were evaluated at the CDC NPPTL, and additional PPE specimens and material… Show more

“…NPPTL also tested the strap integrity of an eBeam irradiated respirator, showing 12.10% and 7.53% decrease in recorded force in the top strap and force in the bottom strap respectively. The strap is made of polyisoprene, which also showed degradation after plasma ROS treatment in our previous work ( Huang et al, 2022 ). The strap functions to provide an effective seal between the filter body and the wearer's face and there are more alternatives to polyisoprene to support this functionality.…”

“…The strap functions to provide an effective seal between the filter body and the wearer's face and there are more alternatives to polyisoprene to support this functionality. For instance, a strap made from polyester/nylon spandex and a combination of Lycra 784 and polyester materials (BYD mask and Prestige Ameritech) are two good potential alternatives to polyisoprene-based straps according to our previous work ( Huang et al, 2022 ).…”

“…Long-lived RONS were chosen as a marker and assessed by an O 3 monitor and a NO x monitor (Model 106l & Model 405 nm, 2B Technologies, Inc., Colorado, USA). Both devices have already been successfully applied for gas phase analysis in CAP processes [28][29][30]. The O 3 monitor operates at a continuous gas sampling rate of 1.0 l min −1 and the NO x monitor at a rate of 1.5 l min −1 .…”

“…Global economic scenario have changed significantly after the COVID-19 [8]. Governments are forced to spend more on healthcare and high fuel prices, Covid-19 vaccinations development, personal safety and modification in indoor environments to prevent spread of virus was main focus of researchers [41][42][43]. To get back on track, governments must prioritize renewable energy investments to ensure affordable energy access.…”
