Plasma urate concentrations and possible REM sleep behavior disorder

Abstract: ObjectiveTo examine how urate concentrations are related to the risk of having possible REM sleep behavior disorder (pRBD) in a community‐based cohort.MethodsThe study included 12,923 Chinese adults of the Kailuan Study, free of Parkinson disease (PD) and dementia. Plasma urate concentrations were measured in 2006, 2008, and 2010. Cumulative average urate concentration was used as primary exposure. In 2012, we determined pRBD status using a validated RBD questionnaire‐Hong Kong (RBDQ‐HK). Logistic regression a… Show more

“…Residual confounding is another limitation. For example, the Kailuan Study did not collect data on depression until 2016 (32) , which was thus not adjusted in the current analysis. However, the prevalence of physician-diagnosed depression (0•13 %) was low among the Kailuan participants (32) , although it could be underdiagnosed.…”

However, the prevalence of physician-diagnosed depression (0•13 %) was low among the Kailuan participants (32) , although it could be underdiagnosed. Further, the Kailuan Study is located in Tangshan city, China, and included a large portion of individuals with low-to-middle education levels and low-income, which may limit the generalisability of the findings to other ethnic groups.…”

“…[15][16][17] Because urate-elevating drugs are currently trialed after disease onset, it is vital to understand the role changing urate levels may play on disease progression. Results from observational studies have shown that lower plasma urate levels have been reported in patients with advanced-stage PD, 4 whereas inverse associations between urate levels and rate of UPDRS change in men 5 and the risk of developing RBD in a Chinese cohort 22 have been reported. However, issues with confounding and reverse causation within observational studies mean causality can never be fully established.…”

“…This scale was also used in some other studies with nice reliability and validity. 33 , 34 The scores of RBDQ-HK were analyzed in this study.…”
