Plasma Uric Acid Level and Risk for Incident Hypertension Among Men

Abstract: Several studies have found that uric acid (UA) level is associated with an increased risk for hypertension, but the association could be confounded by metabolic factors that were not included in these previous studies. UA level and risk for incident hypertension was examined prospectively among men who participated in the Health Professionals' Follow-up Study. From among men without hypertension at the time blood was collected, 750 participants who developed hypertension during the subsequent 8 yr and 750 age-… Show more

“…At the analysis of distribution of insulin and HOMA-IR quintiles, in relation to the quintiles of UA, the present study showed a significant association between higher quintiles of UA and higher quintiles of both insulin and HOMA-IR, a finding that is consistent with the ones observed by Formam et al 26 .…”

“…Regarding the mean age of the individuals in this series (50.3 years), there are no significant differences in relation to most studies on the subject 3,18 , except for the studies carried out in children and adolescents, such as the one by Bogalusa 14 or the trial carried out by Forman et al 26 , in which mean age was 61 years.…”

“…For instance, a prospective, 8-year follow-up study among older men (47-81 years) without hypertension at the start of the study found Uric acid and blood pressure in MS patients S Spitsin et al no independent association between UA level and risk for developing hypertension during follow-up period. 16 In addition, rats on a high fructose diet developed hypertension without an increase in the serum UA levels. 17 There is one obvious difference between our study and others.…”

“…16 The effects of high uric acid level on hypertension might be diminished at older age, when stiffening of the aorta may have a more important role. 18 Furthermore, increasing age is associated with activation of the renin-angiotensin system and with renal vasoconstriction; it is not surprising that the association between uric acid and hypertension may be blunted in older individuals.…”
