Plasmonic gold-embedded TiO2 thin films as photocatalytic self-cleaning coatings

Abstract: Transparent photocatalytic TiO2 thin films hold great potential in the development of self-cleaning glass surfaces, but suffer from a poor visible light response that hinders the application under actual sunlight. To alleviate this problem, the photocatalytic film can be modified with plasmonic nanoparticles that interact very effectively with visible light. Since the plasmonic effect is strongly concentrated in the near surroundings of the entire nanoparticle surface, an approach is presented to embed the pla… Show more

“…The doping of titania (TiO 2 ) with nano-gold decorations has recently enabled the development of highly efficient materials for sensors, energy, smart coating and environment [ 50 , 51 , 52 , 53 , 54 ]. In the present study, the authors selected one of the simplest, cost-effective and green procedures [ 35 ]: AuNP-decorating TiO2 were synthesized by reducing HAuCl 4 onto titania particles in aqueous suspension by a UV-light-catalyzed reaction.…”

“…Moreover, it is known that noble metal-based PASs can undergo memory effects [ 49 , 50 , 51 , 52 ] and lose their structural integrity (loss of adsorbing material) [ 65 ], which can influence sampler accuracy [ 49 ].…”

“…Titanium dioxide TiO 2 is a versatile transition-metal oxide that has a large number of applications such as protective coatings [1][2], Photodetector [3], optical thin films [4][5], microelectronic devices [6], self-cleaning [7][8][9], and photocatalyst for the breakdown of organic contaminants in wastewaters [10][11][12][13]. All these applications are a traduction of their attractive properties such as high transmission in the visible region, wide band gap for anatase phase (3.4 eV), and high photocatalytic activity under UV light [14].…”
