Plasmonic optical properties of a single gold nano-rod

Abstract: Polarization-contrast microscopy coupled with an atomic force microscope is utilized to attain far-field optical images of the multipolar surface plasmon resonance (SPR) modes of single gold nano-rod. Modulated standing modes resulted from the interference of longitudinal SPR modes and incident light are observed and studied. By counting the average distance of adjacent beats on this single gold nano-rod, the wave vector of longitudinal SPR modes can be obtained. We found a linear relationship between the wave… Show more

“…Many groups have explored the LSP resonance frequency of noble metal nanorods fabricated by the electrochemical deposition approach [66][67][68][69][70][71][72], solution phase route [42,[73][74][75], and electron beam lithograph technique [76]. Liu and co-workers presented a new approach to fabricate Au nanorods by controlling the volume of the growth solution [73,75].…”

“…Near-field techniques, which include scanning optical microscopy [35,36] and tip-enhanced photoluminescence [37], allow one to map local-field enhancements. However, these techniques have limited spatial and/or energy resolution.…”

“…Recently, intense efforts have been devoted to the investigation of the properties of individual Ag and Au nanostructures including nanoparticles (NPs) and nanorods by optical imaging [6][7][8][9][10][11]. This is owing to the spatial distribution of the electric field near the nanorods and NPs while how the associated SP modes play roles are still not fully understood [9].…”
