Platelet count and parameters determined by the Bayer ADVIATM 120 in reference subjects and patients

Abstract: In order to study the behaviour of traditional and new platelet parameters determined by the ADVIA 120 Hematology System, five hundred samples from reference subjects, divided for sex and age, were processed. Significant variations on the basis of sex and age were found. Reference ranges as 95% confidence limits were therefore calculated for each age class, and platelet parameters proved to have specific variations during lifetime. Moreover, one hundred samples from thrombocytopenic patients were processed by … Show more

“…However, we have evaluated the correlation between total platelet mass and platelet aggregation and we could not find any correlation in our study. Another index of platelet mass in the sample is PCT and PCT reflects the volume occupied by platelets in blood as percentage [11].…”

“…There is now much interest in developing methods and instruments for an accurate platelet count and the determination of platelet parameters in various pathologies [11]. Recent advances in automated blood cell analysers have made it possible to measure blood cell parameters automatically.…”

“…Published normal ranges for cell counts vary slightly with patient population and method of analysis. Normal ranges in a Caucasian population demonstrate a red cell count of 4:3225:66310 12 cells/L in men and 3:8824:99310 12 cells/L in women, a leukocyte count of 3:729:5310 9 cells/L in men and 3:9211:1310 9 cells/L in women (Bain 2006) and a platelet count of 1652396310 9 cells/L (Giacomini et al 2001). The proportion of the total volume of whole blood that red blood cells occupy (commonly called the packed cell volume or haematocrit) is normally in the range 39%-51% for males and 36%-48% for females Tefferi 2000, 2001).…”
