Platelet fatty acid composition in relation to fatty acid composition in plasma and to serum lipoprotein lipids in healthy subjects with special reference to the linoleic acid pathway

Abstract: The fatty acid composition in platelet phospholipids and in the plasma lipid esters as well as the serum lipoprotein lipid concentrations were determined in 67 healthy male subjects in order to establish the relationships between blood lipids and platelets. A positive correlation was found between the concentrations of the triglyceride rich serum lipoprotein lipids and the relative percentage of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids in plasma. The correlations were also positive between the serum high dens… Show more

“…Expression levels were quantified in arbitrary units using a five-point serially diluted cDNA standard curve. The fatty acid composition of subcutaneous adipose tissue was analysed by gas liquid chromatography as described previously [14]. The relative amount of each fatty acid quantified was expressed as the percentage of the total amount of fatty acids.…”

“…20 The fatty acid composition of the serum lipids (CE and PLs) were analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography, as previously described in detail. 22 The gas-liquid chromatography system consists of a GC 5890, an automatic 7671 sampler, a 3392A integrator (all Hewlett-Packard, Avondale, PA, USA) and a 25-m Nordion fused silica capillary column NS-351(HNU Systems Inc, Helsinki, Finland) with helium as the carrier gas. The temperature is programmed to 100-210 1C.…”

“…The BMI was calculated as the ratio of body weight (kg) to height squared (m 2 ). The fatty acid composition in serum PL, serum CE and the supplied food items were determined by gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) as described earlier by Boberg et al (1985). Very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL), LDL, HDL were isolated by a combination of preparative ultracentrifugation (Havel et al, 1955) and precipitation with a sodium phosphotungstate and magnesium chloride solution (Seigler & Wu, 1981).…”
