Platelet Lipid Composition in Human Migraine

Abstract: SYNOPSIS Fatty acid profiles were determined in platelets of 21 patients suffering from Classical Migraine and these results were compared with those obtained in a control group of 24 healthy individuals. Cholesterol levels and the cholesterol/phospholipid ratios of 4 of the migraine patients were investigated and compared with values obtained from 4 age‐matched control persons. No significant differences could be detected between the fatty acid profiles of the migraine and control groups, Analysis of the chol… Show more

“…Our in vitro finding nevertheless does not rule out a tendency to hyperaggregant platelet hyperactivity in vivo [17]. The fluidity of the membrane thus appears m be stable, as others [1] have found. Some workers [23] think that high intracellular concentrations of Ca + + in attack-free intervals should be attributed to peculiar conditions intrinsic to the platelet or alternatively to extrinsic plasma factors.…”

“…In particolare sono stati studiati la produzione di malondialdeide (MDA), la concentrazione del Ca + + intracellulare e la struttura fosfolipidica di membrana con probe fluorescente DPH (1,3,5 hexatriene). “…Following this, studies were carried out in the 1970’s-1980’s comparing platelet lipid composition in a diverse and somewhat unusual array of population groups and species 5-15 . Also, with interest in the role of lipids causing vascular disease increasing around that time, the effects of dietary supplementation with lipids on platelet lipid fatty acid composition (omega-3, fish oil, corn oil, or varying dietary fat) was characterized 16-18 .…”

“…Fatty acid profiles, cholesterol content and the cholesterol/phospholipid ratio of platelets in migraineurs and controls are similar. 97 However, some authors have noticed a difference in some aspects of phosphocholines within subgroups of migraineurs. 98 Concluding comments.…”
