Impedance mismatch that degrades signal power transfer and affects communication reliability is a major obstacle for power line communications (PLC). Impedance matching techniques can be designed to effectively compensate for the impedance mismatch between PLC modems and power line networks at a specific frequency or for a given frequency band. In this paper, we discuss the tradeoffs that need to be made when designing an effective impedance matching network. We also make a comprehensive review of previous state-of-the-art PLC impedance matching techniques and provide a useful classification of each technique. Finally, we discuss important issues (concerns) and provide suggestions for research directions deserving more attention. This review provides a useful guideline for researchers and manufacturers to quickly understand impedance matching principles and facilitate the design of an effective impedance matching coupler for PLC applications.

SUMMARYThis paper provides an overview of power line communication (PLC) applications, challenges and possible evolution. Emphasis is put on two relevant aspects: a) channel characterization and modeling, b) filter bank modulation for spectral efficient transmission. The main characteristics of both the indoor channel (in-home, in-ship, in-car) and the outdoor low voltage and medium voltage channels are reported and compared. A simple approach to statistically model the channel frequency response (CFR) is described and it is based on the generation of a vector of correlated random variables. To overcome the channel distortions, it is shown that filter bank modulation can provide robust performance. In particular, it is shown that the sub-channel spectral containment of filtered multitone modulation (FMT) can provide high notching capability and spectral efficiency. Reduced complexity can be obtained with a cyclic filter bank modulation approach that we refer to as cyclic block FMT modulation (CB-FMT) which still provides higher spectral flexibility/efficiency than OFDM. key words: power line communications, power line channel, channel model, filter bank modulation

Power line communication (PLC) is a valuable solution to limit the amount of wiring, reduce the weight and thus increase the performance of electric vehicles. Basically, PLC removes the need of a dedicated wiring infrastructure for the data exchange by signaling over the power delivery cables.This work shows the potentialities of such technology reporting the performance of commercially available PLC devices designed for in-home networks and adapted for the in-vehicle scenario. Further, it provides an insight on the channel and noise characteristics and proves the robustness of PLC, a technology that is able to cope with high attenuation, large periodic noise and disruptive impulses. Finally, an application example where a rear camera is connected via PLC to a display placed on the dashboard of the vehicle is described.978-1-4799-6075-0/14/$31.00 ©2014 IEEE
