Pleural effusion after microtia reconstructive surgery -A case report-

Abstract: Microtia reconstructive surgery is usually a multi-stage repair procedure that involves the use of cartilage and skin grafts. Complications can arise at both ear reconstruction sites and cartilage donor sites. In particular, pneumothorax, atelectasis, chest scars, and chest deformities are known to be associated with the harvesting of costal cartilage. However, delayed pleural effusion can also develop. Our patient complained of a cough and chest pain at 5 days postoperatively, and pleural effusion was detecte… Show more

“…In these conditions, abnormally shaped ribs move backward under the force of respiratory muscles and negative thoracic pressure, leading to a local depression on the chest, especially in patients in the growth and development period ( Park, 1997 ). Donor site morbidities were reported to be pneumothorax, atelectasis, pleural effusion, etc., at an early stage ( Thomson et al, 1995 ; Kim et al, 2011 ; Moon et al, 2012 ), and in the delayed stage, the morbidities were described as persistent pain, thoracic scoliosis, clicking, seroma, abnormal scarring, contour deformity, etc. ( Osorno, 1999 ; Osorno, 2007 ; Uppal et al, 2008 ; Moon et al, 2012 ).…”

“…Microtia is a congenital anomaly of the auricle that ranges in severity from mild structural abnormalities to complete absence of the ear. [ 9 , 10 ] Patients with microtia undergo embedding and elevation surgeries for reconstruction. Initially, autologous cartilage is harvested and implanted at the desired location of the ear (embedding surgery).…”
