Pleural fluid MDA and serum-effusion albumin gradient in pleural effusion

Abstract: Pleural fluid malondialdehyde (PMDA) and serum effusion albumin gradient(SEAG) were estimated in 60 patients of pleural effusion of diverse etiologies. The results were compared with Light's criteria to distinguish between transudates and exudates. The mean PMDA level was 0.68±0.24nmol/ml and 1.17±0.25nmol/ml in transudates and exudates respectively showing a statistically significant (p<0.05) rise in exudates in comparison to transudates. SEAG registered a significant fall in exudates (P<0.001) when compared … Show more

“…A transudate was defined as having either a pleural fluid to serum protein ratio of ≤0.50, a pleural fluid to serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) ratio of ≤0.6, or a pleural fluid LDH <143 units/L, which is two-thirds of the upper limit of normal for serum LDH (214) at our institutions. 12 , 23 Patients were excluded in the setting of known infection, positive Gram stain, culture, or glucose <65 mg/dL. 4 , 10 , 31 …”

“…Biochemical parameters of pleural fluid were determined using a selective discrete multichannel analyzer. Total protein concentration (g/dl) was measured by auto analyzer using Biuret method (Technicon RA 1000),[ 3 ] lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) level were measured by auto analyzer using modified International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC) method (Technicon RA1000)[ 3 ] and ADA levels measured by auto analyzer using the colorimetric end point method described by Guisti and Galanti[ 4 ] (Microlab 300, Merck, The Netherlands). Then after obtaining proper informed consent pleural biopsy was done in all patients using Abram’s pleural biopsy needle.…”
