Plodia interpunctella (Hu¨bner), the Indian meal moth, is a worldwide insect pest of stored-products and processed food commodities. It can infest a variety of products and is perhaps the most economically important insect pest of processed food. In this review, we summarize the biology of P. interpunctella, discuss oviposition and development in relation to temperature, environment and food source, examine studies involving sampling and detection, describe various aspects of integrated control, summarize the current knowledge regarding management of P. interpunctella, and address potential areas for new research. The use of reduced-risk insecticides, non-chemical control, targeted pest management through spatial analysis and other means of identifying specific locations of infestations, and computer models that simulate population growth, are examples of some of those new areas of research.

The genetic impact of immigrant males on resident populations of the almond moth, Ephestia cautella (Walker) was studied using wild‐type males as immigrants into genetically marked (black wing) resident populations. Ratios of immigrant to resident males varied from 0.83:1 to 2:1 in the eleven tests. Offspring were characterized as sired by an immigrant or resident male by the use of the recessive genetic marker. The percentage of the progeny sired by immigrant males varied from 40.2 % to 96.4 % of the total (with one exception, an experiment in which all male immigrants accidentally died). The unexpectedly high percentage of progeny from immigrant males was attributed to remating of females and sperm precedence of later inseminations. The tests support the suggestion that desirable traits like insecticide susceptibility could be reintroduced into resistant populations by the release of large numbers of susceptible males. Zusammenfassung Über den genetischen Druck eingewanderter Männchen auf die vorhandene Population der Mandelmotte, Ephestia cautella (Walker) (Lep., Phycitidae) Der von eingewanderten Männchen von Ephestia cautella ausgeübte Druck auf die vorhandenen Populationen wurde unter Verwendung von Wildtypen‐Männchen als Einwanderer und von genetisch markierten (schwarze Flügel) vorhandenen Populationen untersucht. Das Verhältnis von eingewanderten zu vorhandenen Männchen variierte in 11 Tests zwischen 0,8:1 und 2:1. Die Nachkommen wurden als gezeugt von einem eingewanderten oder vorhandenem Männchen charakterisiert durch Verwendung der rezessiven genetischen Markierung. Der Anteil der von eingewanderten Männchen gezeugten Nachkommen variierte von 40,2 bis 96,4 % (mit Ausnahme eines Experiments, wo alle eingewanderten Männchen zufällig starben). Der unerwartet hohe Anteil der Nachkommen von eingewanderten Männchen wurde zurückgeführt auf wiederholte Kopulationen der Weibchen und einem Spermien‐Vorrang von späteren Befruchtungen. Die Versuche stützen die Vermutung, daß wünschenswerte Merkmale, wie Insektizid‐Empfindlichkeit, durch Freilassen großer Mengen empfindlicher Männchen in resistente Populationen hineingebracht werden könnten.
