Plug-and-Play Solutions for Energy-Efficiency Deep Renovation of European Building Stock

Abstract: Ninety percent of the existing building stock in Europe was built before 1990. These buildings are in urgent need for a significant improvement of energy-efficiency through renovation. State-of-the-art renovation solutions are available, but costly and lengthy renovation processes and incomprehensible technical complexities hinder the achievement of a wide impact at a European scale. This paper presents a research on Plug-and-Play (PnP) technologies supported by Building Information Modelling (BIM) to provide … Show more

“…Several studies [8,15,16] indicate that energy-efficient renovation of buildings is not on par with its potential, and, according to the Buildings Performance Institute Europe's (BPIE's) [11] data, due to the insufficient monitoring, it is even difficult to estimate whether the target of a 3% annual rate is being achieved.…”

“…Despite the EU-wide systemic measures, there are still many problems with building renovation in practice. According to [8], thus far, only 5% of the renovation projects have been able to yield energy-saving at the deep renovation level. Although renovation solutions are available, renovation processes are expensive and prolonged, and a variety of technical complexities hinders the achievement of energy-saving goals within the EU.…”

“…The panel integration into the steel structure is performed through a plug-in system, as seen in Figure 4, allowing quick and clean installation and disassembly at the end of the renovation solution's life cycle [64,65]. The plug-in solution increases the advantages of a modular and prefabricated renovation solution, leading to a renovation solution with less environmental impact and waste generation [16,66,67].…”

“…Moreover, the larger the façade element, the quicker the installation, but the more difficult and expensive the transportation. In P2ENDURE, the 4M modular process clarifies the stepwise PnP approach for preparing and implementing the deep renovation followed by real monitoring of the resulting performance improvements [39]. During Mapping, an As-Built BIM derived from '3D scan to BIM' is created to combine the necessary building information and improve communication between the different actors.…”
