Plugging effect of open-ended piles in sandy soil

Abstract: This paper presents an experimental study of the plugging effect on the capacity of open-ended piles installed in sandy soil. Full-scale tests, including dynamic and static axial compression load tests, were carried out on three instrumented piles with different diameters (508.0, 711.2, and 914.4 mm). To measure the outer and inner shaft resistances acting on the piles, a double-walled system was utilized, with instrumented strain gauges on the outside and inside walls of the pile. The results of field tests s… Show more

“…Note that the inner diameter of the test pile was only 250 mm and thus it was difficult to install strain gauges inside the pile. To measure the annulus resistance of the pile base and the soil plug resistance separately, double-walled pile systems have been used for open-ended steel pipe piles in calibration chambers (e.g., Lehane and Gavin 2001;Paik et al 2003) and in the field (e.g., Ko and Jeong 2015). However, the double-walled pile method is not applicable to concrete piles as the wall thickness is significantly larger than steel pipe piles.…”

“…
The authors have presented an interesting account of a fullscale study of the response of a pipe pile driven with an open toe to the presence of an inside soil column in the pile (Ko and Jeong 2015). The tests consisted of dynamic measurements during the driving and static loading tests some time after the driving on double-wall pipe piles.

“…Figure 2 in Ko and Jeong (2015) represents the general bearing capacity mechanism for open-ended piles. This figure is not illustrating the force direction of the core, but rather the shaft resistance acting between the core and inside of the pile.…”

“…As mentioned in Ko and Jeong (2015), Q plug is the smaller value of either the inner shaft resistance, Q in , or the bearing capacity of the soil beneath the plug base, Q base . Thus, if Q in is greater than Q b , the pile will fail in the plugged mode.…”
