In recent years, not only 239þ240 Pu concentrations but the 240 Pu/ 239 Pu atom ratio has become increasingly important in monitoring programs and oceanographic investigations, because the atom ratio can be used as a fingerprinting tool for identifying the origins and behavior in the ocean (Buesseler, 1997;Kim et al, 2003Kim et al, , 2004Muramatsu et al, 2001;Oikawa and Yamamoto, 2007;Yamada et al, 2006Yamada et al, , 2007Zheng and Yamada, 2004, 2005a.
