Pneumococcal meningitis before the introduction of 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine into the National Childhood Immunization Program in Poland

Abstract: Background: Poland introduced the 10-valent conjugate pneumococcal vaccine (PCV10) into the childhood immunization program in January 2017. During previous decades, considerable changes had occurred in the surveillance system for invasive pneumococcal disease. Therefore, to provide baseline data on pneumococcal diseases before PCV10 introduction, we evaluated the epidemiology of pneumococcal meningitis (PM), the only syndrome monitored consistently since 1970. Methods: Based on laboratory-confirmed cases repor… Show more

“…In Lithuania, serotypes 6B, 19F and 23F were most commonly isolated from children under 6 years of age with acute upper respiratory tract infection in 2012-2013 [47,48]. In Poland, 91 % of pneumococcal meningitis cases in children <5 years were caused due to PCV13 serotypes in 2008-2011 [49]; subsequently, the number of cases dropped to 64 % in 2012-2015, which might be linked to vaccination of children <5 years with risk factors and local vaccination programmes [49].…”

“…Serotype 8 associated with lower OR for death [ 47 , 72 ] and/or lower CFR [ 38 , 75 ], and so did serotype 12F [ 38 , 75 ]. Serotypes 10A and 22F showed a high case fatality proportion in meningitis [ 77 ].…”

“…In our research, we took into account the two commonest etiological factors: Streptococcus pneumoniae and Neisseria meningitidis [12,13]. After the introduc-tion of population-based immunization against Haemophilus influenzae in Poland, an invasive bacterial infection caused by Haemophilus influenzae is no longer a problem [14].…”
