Polariton Induced Transparency at Low Light Level: Polymer Chains Dispersed in a Monomer Single Crystal

Abstract: Excitons of polydiacetylene chains, diluted in a 3BCMU monomer single crystal, turn at very low light intensity into a nonabsorbing polariton state once the polymer concentration exceeds 10{-4} in weight. The transition is evident from a Lorentzian absorption peak which is truncated at an optical density OD approximately 2 and is consistent with polariton coupling of light to eigenstates of the solid while Rabi coupling of individual chains to light is excluded. The saturated absorption is nearly independent o… Show more

“…(26) gives a thermal coherence length, (N coh − 1)d ≈ 350 Å, in excellent agreement with the coherence length (in blue-phase PDA) measured using the Franz-Keldysh effect in Ref. The coupling between the very large oscillator strength of the PDA chain and the light field may produce polaritons 34,35 at sufficiently large excitation light intensities. The value is, however, significantly less than the coherence length of several microns measured in microfluorescence experiments on red-phase PDA.…”

“…This is in stark contrast to works which have shown EP formation under strict resonant excitation 27,77 (optical field ~0.02 V m -1 ) in macroscopic single crystals with optical densities ~10 times larger than those used here 27,77 , and at cryogenic temperatures. We remark that our transport velocities compare to those on standard microcavity polaritons 11 where velocities of ~1 × 10 6 m s -1 were reported.…”

“…Intrinsic polaritons show anomalous dispersion and can be identified through coherent oscillations patterns in the retardation of propagating ultrafast pulses [19][20][21][22][23] . In organic materials this formalism effectively rationalises the metallic reflectivity of some macroscopic organic single crystals and has been investigated in detail elsewhere [24][25][26][27][28] . However, to the best of our knowledge, such 'intrinsic' polaritons have neither a well-defined photonic state nor distinct EP lifetime in organic systems, and it is unclear to what extent they carry electronic population; in inorganic systems they may support a lifetime 29 .…”

“…The saturation cannot result from undamped propagation of a tightly bound polariton state of exciton and photon as in 3BCMU since it is independent of temperature. 16 Light of polarization ! e k a provides best coupling to the transition dipoles of the chain but excites on the ac face two propagating electromagnetic waves of orthogonal polarization since only the b-axis de…nes a principal axis of the dielectric tensor.…”

“…14,15 By increasing the density of blue chains coherent coupling of excitons to radiation modes of the monomer crystal leads to a tightly bound polariton which enables transmission of light in resonance to the exciton through thick crystals of 3BCMU. 16,17 Despite such unique properties the very same C 4 building block leaves little room for variation of these quantum wires. A promising modi…cation is doubling the repeat unit as in poly-THD (1,6-bis(diphenylamino)-2,4-hexadiyne)…”
