Police Response to Intimate Partner Violence

Abstract

This entry chronicles the police response to intimate partner violence (IPV) in the United States. Topics covered include the variety of legislative and programmatic developments that have influenced how the police respond to victims of intimate partner violence over the past 50 years. Also summarized is the growing body of research that addresses the effectiveness of the police response. Future challenges for police will involve finding ways to respond to IPV that meet public safety needs, provide equal treatment, and consider the needs of victims facing complicated relationships and living circumstances.
